Transportation of Lithium metal batteries (Revised on January. 2018)
Lithium metal battery is classified as Class 9 dangerous goods in the United Nations Recommendations, and given UN number UN3090 and UN3091, so all the relevant UN regulation as well as all requirement of each regulation shall be met for transportation of Lithium metal batteries by air.
It is remarkable that, since Air transportation regulation for Lithium battery will be amended on as-necessary basis regarding transportation of Lithium metal cells and batteries alone, please always refer to the latest IATA-DGR (59th ed.).
Points to note to transport our Lithium batteries
  • In the sense of transportation, our all Lithium batteries are classified as Lithium metal battery.
  • Our Lithium batteries and shipping packages are met requirement of UN Manual of Test and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3.
  • Package specifications of our Lithium batteries comply with all requirements set down on each transport regulation. In such case that you will use our original package for shipping and require for various forms of certificate, please contact our responsible department through to a distribution channel.
  • If you may pack Lithium batteries in your own way, please note that you shall carry out of relevant test for package and prepare various forms of certificate by yourself.
  • For each shipping company’s reason, they may put their own restriction for transportation, so contact them in advance.
In case of transportation of our Lithium batteries by air
  • Transportation of batteries alone (UN3090)
    In case of transportation of Lithium metal batteries alone, according to Packing Instruction 968 (PI968) of IATA Dangerous Goods Regulation (IATA-DGR), the way of transportation are classified three categories as following;
    • Transportation of batteries as Section IA
In such case that lithium content of cell is over 1g, or total lithium content of battery (battery pack) is over 2g, is applicable to Section IA, they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as Class 9 Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section IA.
    • Transportation of batteries as Section IB
In such case that lithium content of cell is over 0.3g to 1g and less, or total lithium content of battery (battery pack) is 2g and less, is applicable to Section IB, they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as Class 9 Dangerous Goods and no need using packing group II package when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section IB.
    • Transportation of batteries as Section II
In such case that lithium content of cell or battery (battery pack) is 0.3g and less is applicable to Section II, they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as exempted Class 9 Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section II.
In such case that number of cell per one package is 8 pcs and less, or number of battery per package is 2 pcs and less, they are applicable to Section II though their lithium content are applicable to Section IB, so they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as exempted Class 9 Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section II. However, in case of air transportation of lithium metal cells and batteries as Section II, the number of packages to transport per one air way bill is restricted to one package only.

  • Transportation of batteries contained in or packed with equipment
In case of transportation of batteries contained in or packed with equipment, if lithium content of cell is 1g and less, or total lithium content of battery is 2 g and less, they are applicable to Section II, so they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as exempted Class 9 Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section II. If those of lithium content are over aforementioned values, they are applicable to Section I, so they and their shipping package are permitted to transport as Class 9 Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *1 of the transport conditions of Section IA.
*1) For more detailed information of transport condition, please refer IATA-DGR 59th edition
In case of transportation of our Lithium batteries by sea
In case of transportation of Lithium metal batteries by sea, if lithium content of cell is 1g and less, or total lithium content of battery (battery pack) is 2g and less, Special provision 188, International Maritime Dangerous Code (IMDG-Code) applies to them, so they and their package are permitted to transport as exempted Dangerous Goods when they comply with all requirements *2 of the transport condition.
*2) For more detailed information of transport condition, please refer latest version of IMDG-Code
Regulation for air transportation of USA
In case of air transportation of Lithium metal batteries in USA, transport by Passenger aircraft is forbidden, so the marking of ”Lithium Metal batteries forbidden for transport aboard Passenger aircraft” on package is required. Note) Please refer latest version of 49CFR (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49) Parts 171, 172, 173 and 175 for more detailed.
